An assembly point can be an essential feature in an organisations fire emergency plan – What are the features a responsible person should consider?
Although most organisations need an assembly point, others may benefit from an “evacuation and disperse” policy. Dispersal policies are typically found where there is a large number of persons in a building and assembly point may cause congestion or a hindrance to fire crews arriving at the scene.
Those that pick assembly points should consider the following issues:
- Preferably 50 metres form the building but not less than 18 metres because of thee possibility of radiated heat
- Totally safe – Try to avoid the need to cross roads as this may slow down the evacuation at the exit of the building
- Weather protection and lighting could be beneficial
- Consider a secondary assembly point in case the fire becomes a protracted incident
