Should fire marshals help with fire safety checks and maintenance? Fire marshal training in London question

A responsible person must have an adequate fire evacuation plan for their workplace in the event of a fire or fire alarm operating. They must also have a sufficient number of competent persons to implement the plan when required. These competent persons (fire marshals / fire wardens etc) should also take part in any planned fire drills. The fire drills will refresh fire marshals and other staff of their duties and can help highlight any deficiencies in the fire evacuation plan.

In addition to the legal requirements above, some fire marshals assist with other tasks. These include:

  • Training new staff including temps
  • Helping to update the fire evacuation plan / fire emergency plan
  • Carrying out fire safety inspections of their workplace
  • Helping  with fire safety equipment checks

Fire safety equipment checks include assisting with weekly call alarm point test, monthly emergency lighting tests, fire extinguisher checks (monthly / quarterly), checking fire doors, fire exits and service risers are all in good order.

For more information on the duties of fire marshals and fire wardens, come on one of our fire marshal training in London programmes or consider booking an in house fire marshal courses London session for your staff. Our open fire marshal courses in London are held every month or so. Call now for more details.

Why do fire wardens and fire marshals need more fire training?

There is a requirement for all staff to receive regular fire training. They should be taught the contents of the fire emergency plan. This will include what to do if they discover a fire, what to do if they hear an alarm, details of the fire alarm, details of fire fighting equipment, accounting procedures, the importance of fire doors, how to operate fire alarm call points, fire doors etc.

Fire wardens and fire marshals must also know this essential information but will also need to know more details of the fire evacuation strategy, how fires start and behave in buildings, how persons react to fires in buildings, how to marshal persons to a place of safety, arrangements for disabled persons or other persons with reduced mobility. They may also be required to assist with updating fire emergency plans, fire evacuation plans, simple staff fire training, implementing  and debriefing fire drills etc.

All of these issues are covered in City Fire Training fire marshal courses in London. Our courses can be delivered as in house fire warden training London programmes, on-site fire warden training in London or as open fire marshal training London programmes at our training venue in East London.

Assembly points – Good practice guide

An assembly point can be an essential feature in an organisations fire emergency plan – What are the features a responsible person should consider?

Although most organisations need an assembly point, others may benefit from an “evacuation and disperse” policy. Dispersal policies are typically found where there is a large number of persons in a building and assembly point may cause congestion or a hindrance to fire crews arriving at the scene.

Those that pick assembly points should consider the following issues:

  • Preferably 50 metres form the building but not less than 18 metres because of thee possibility of radiated heat
  • Totally safe – Try to avoid the need to cross roads as this may slow down the evacuation at the exit of the building
  • Weather protection and lighting could be beneficial
  • Consider a secondary assembly point in case the fire becomes a protracted incident
