City Fire Training report increase in training requests in Essex

City Fire Training have reported an increase in requests for fire training in Essex since Xmas.

“Fire training courses in London have been a regular feature over the last three years in the CFT diary but we have had less demand in Essex. A modest increase in marketing as seen a big increase in fire marshal courses in Essex, Fire extinguisher training in Essex, fire safety for schools courses and residential care home fire training” says Bill Seccombe, director of CFT.

The company has also reported an increase in requests for fire risk assessments and fire safety advice in the County. It would appear that the fire service has a new approach to enforcing fire safety and this coupled with the new marketing initiatives has seen an increases in enquiries and bookings for the company.

The new website Fire Training Course .Com has contributed to other requests and bookings from other parts of the country. The site was launched three weeks ago but has already seen bookings in Kent, London and Cambridgeshire.

Fire drills and staff fire training

Managers should carry out enough fire drills to ensure that all staff practice at least once a year.Government guidance says that the benefits of surpise fire drills may be outweighed by the health and safety issues associated with giving no prior warning.

City Fire Training say ” All staff should be informed of fire drills. If they are told when a fire drill occurs and know when the fire alarm is tested, when the alarm goes off for a real emergency, staff will know it is a real event”.

Everyone must participate in the fire drill, but if this causes extreme difficulties or poses a security risk , then some persons may remain in the building, however a another fire drill involving those who did not take part should be held. You should record the result of each fire drill in your fire log book.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 requires responsible persons to nominate and train a sufficient number of staff to help carry out fire drills and emergency evacuation procedures. This includes training on how to operate any fire-fighting equipment considered necessary.

Fire safety induction training

The responsible person must provide all employees with instruction and training so that they know what to do in the event of a fire and any other details in the fire emergency plan.

Every employee, including those on temporary or short term contracts must know:

  • how to raise the alarm if they discover a fire
  • who contacts the fire brigade
  • how to use the fire extinguishers and any other fire fighting equipment
  • how to evacuate the building
  • where the assembly point is
